In April Fran and Stephen finished off what was quite a musical month with a short set in Bendigo with The Surrender Monkeys filling the roles of Bon, G-Roy, Jam-e and Penstir who couldn't be there for various reasons. Thanks also to Dallas at The Newie for once again making us feel so at home, great to see a booker dancing to a band and fantastic to have Francesca Bussey join us on bass for the evening. Thanks also to guest guitarist Lance Hillier for his spectacular guitar work and Bridgett Robertson for adding her as always lovely harmonies. This was our 2nd Annual Bendigo show with Cheese Excursion which went so well we've made a pact to do it again next year, if you're planning a trip to Regional Victoria anytime pencil in Bendigo for the Easter Weekend, plenty of "Side Show" events like the Easter and the night dragon parades, quilting exhibits etc. see you there!?

August 2007 : We played three shows and continued work on the album. Thanks to Summer Cats for asking us to join them at their 1st record launch! and Tom at The Toff for looking after us (definitely the Toffest rider we've ever seen) and the audience for all coming down (or up) so early.

September 30th 2007: Just got back from two very enjoyable and well attended shows in Perth and an equally enjoyable HouseParty in Dunsborough WA ~ while over there we also managed to do a radio interview on RTRFM + Fran and Stephen made a live appearance on CH31s Wake Up WA programme, you can watch it stream at mefeedia.com ~ enormous thanks to Alexandra Glazov for making the tour happen! + everyone else who looked after us, came to shows and lent us gear, I think Fran has written a fairly extensive account of our time across at MySpace/Cannanes, We'll try and get a full account up here some time this century.

LAST OF THE LITTLE DAYS OUT
18th Nov 2007 made it back to play our fifth! Little Day Out in Sydney which was as usual a top afternoon for all involved, once again Ian Moss and his missus Margeaux graced the Laurel Tree House stage (this year with their son on drums!) as well the Baby Bees and surprise guests Darren Hanlon & Sarah Blasco. The Cannanes were pleased by the level of audience participation (ie. use of maracas & tambourines) in the 1-5 age group, some of whome have no doubt witnessed the band live every single year of their young lives! and seemed quite hip to the rhythms.

BONE CURSE STRIKES AGAIN!

bone splint

Unfortunately on the 20th or was it 21st? of October 2007 as The Cannanes were about to make an impromptu appearance at a birthday party in Bendigo G-Roy was smitten again by the mysterious Cannanes bone curse and unfortunately managed to re-break one of his wrists [you may recall he broke both in a fall from a pushbike back in 2005]. Also that evening The Cannanes played their first ever live set without Stephen! Details still a bit sketchy though it seems the show went on while Stephen took G-Roy to the hospital.

2008 APPLECORE > G ROY BOWS OUT > LIGHT BULB FESTIVAL > US/MEXICO TOUR > CANNANES GET THE BOOT!

On the 26th of January we played our first show for 2008 at Penny Lane! (Guildford/Victoria) followed in February by a fine day out at the APPLECORE FESTIVAL held in Brunswick (Melbourne/Australia), you can view footage of the show on YouTube {click the photo of the show below} - Many thanks to Alexis Hall for filming this + sending us some lovely photos of the day.

19th of April we played Bendigo with the excellent bill of ~ A Million Bright Ambassadors of Morning, Lucinda Scott & James Earthenware.

26th of April 2008 we played our last Australian show (before OS) at The Brunswick Hotel in Melbourne. We thank the large crowd that made it down on a rainy Melbourne night, as always the dancers + new mates The Zebras and Deadbeat Club who got the night off to a lively start, the evening also saw the departure of long time Cannanes collaborator Gus Butler who announced his retirement from the stage after 30 years of rockin & rollin (but currently playing with a well known 'masked' Melbourne rock band - no not TISM!), we thank Gus for his input over the years and wish him well in his new musical endeavours.

In mid 2008 we completed a two month tour of the United States & played our first ever shows in Florida & then had the honour of playing two shows and doing a live to air in Mexico City! While in Monterrey [Mex.] a 2-3 hour radio show was broadcast on the local College station... we hope to get hold of a copy for streaming here some time inthe future...We also managed to spend a couple of weeks recording what would become the Small Batch Mini Album with Explosion Robinson in New York. During our first week of recording in the U.S. (on May 23 '08) the WORLD PREMIERE! of the Cannanes documentary SHORT POPPY SYNDROME took place on the other side of The Atlantic at the LIGHTBULB film festival in Newcastle [U.K.]; here was the blurb [ Light Bulb 08 presents 'Dirty on the Shovel' A Cannanes retrospective on film Featuring the world premiere of Short Poppy Syndrome: A Cannanes Documentary + short films by Stinky Fire Engine, Cat's Meow, Boy Racer and Ampersands + A Warning OST by Iain McIntyre (Australia) ].

2009 A GIGLESS YEAR!

Due to heavy workloads and some sad and draining personal events in late 2008 the band didn't do much for most of 2009. We didn't manage any shows (the only time in our 30+ years as a band); but some recording work took place and there were some releases, and various band members involved themselves with other side projects; Stephen with a brace of reuinion shows of his old band The Lighthouse Keepers, Penny with her many bands, Bon with various Melbourne outfits...

One of the many strange things that have happened to us over the years occured when Tokyo pop icons Citrus released there 'best of' Pits Art The Pits (25GOLD=RARE=DEBROS 1992-2000) CD. Slap bang in the middle of their 'best of' they placed the Cannanes standard "Frightening Thing"; not a cover version but the Cannanes own recording... still haven't got to the bottom of why, but they did ask permission - and all we can say is THANK YOU! + go out and buy any Citrus record you can get your hands on. they are all great!

2010 UK MINI TOUR - etc

February Fran, James & Stephen attended the 20,000 strong SlamRally (Save Live Australian Music) to help save small Venues in Victoria: an impressive crowd and entertainment, though we were hoping for a speech from Dave Graney! Seems now the new laws will be modified but it would still be good if you could take the time to sign the petition (see link below).
. Save Melbournes Venues! ~ recent changes to licensing laws in Victoria are endangering many if not most of Melbourne (and Australias) finest small venues. Some of you may have recently heard of the loss of the Tote ~ sad day indeed ~ Please take the time to check out the SlamRally website & sign the petition & spread the word!

2011 ANOTHER TOUGH YEAR

2011 saw a variety of shows in Australia and a fair bit of time was spent in the studio - a planned live appearance and recording sessions in Flagstaff in New York had to be cancelled after Stephen & Fran arrived in Los Angeles only to discover the next morning Stephens sister had died suddenly and unexpectedly - we apologies profusely to everyone that made arrangements to be at the show, but sure you would all understand. This was the first time we have had to pull out of show in all the years The Cannanes have existed. The show itself went ahead, many thanks to MSG for standing in for us; and we are reliably informed - a good time was had by all who attended.
