'Van Park' a musical comedy which focuses on "a group of fellow music lovers have gathered to live out their remaining years" in a caravan park

From March 21st till April 1st 2012 there was a musical play titled Van Park staged in Melbourne featuring the songs of Greg Appel & his brother Steve; as well as a few select Oz Rock Classics. Live music was provided by Steves band King Curly to accompany the actor/singers who include international Rock/Pop Legends ~ John Paul Young & Steve Kilbey!

VAN PARK

Mix the Antipodean humour of 'Kenny' with a dash of the camp musical 'Priscilla', add a couple of rock legends, sprinkle with a splendidly solid soundtrack –and bring to the boil. What do you get? Theatre you might actually enjoy!

A huge hit at the inaugural Sydney Fringe Festival - starring John Paul Young, Steve Kilbey and an eclectic cast of musicians and actors. This is a musical comedy that even men need not fear.

The script was lovingly hand-crafted by well known documentary maker Greg Appel. Originally the result of a fleeting idea that he and Paul Clarke had while driving past a Caravan Park during the making of 'A long way to the Top' (ABC TV 2001). The music was then created by Greg's brother Steve Appel who's garage cabaret band 'King Curly' have become part of the show.

It is the story of a group of washed up rockers who wind up in a caravan park. Amongst these battle hardened creatures a sensitive young boy come of age. But it is quite an unusual van park. Enter the exotic love interest and let the music begin. JPY's seventies hit song 'Yesterday’s Hero' is a truly fitting finale.

If you want someone to play a washed up rocker who better than yesterday's hero?
CATHY MCABE The Telegraph (Sydney)

'Van Park' was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Fringe, and one of the successes of our first year. It sold fantastically well, to the point that we were turning audiences away at later performances. Greg has clearly hit on something that has broad appeal.
KRIS STEWART Festival Director THE SYDNEY FRINGE
